About Gallery

Everyone knows the term “socialist realism” which is connected with official art trends of the totalitarian epoch of Stalin of 1920-1950s. There were artists who belonged to the abovementioned art school, but they had non-official works unknown to the general public. Actually this artists layer occupies the basic place in our assemblage.

Their art reflects real life of the young Soviet country of 1920-1950s; it may be called “socialist romanticism” lacking deliberate Soviet propaganda. That is why these works were “out of history“ for a long time, although their creators are no less talented than many so-called first-rate persons.

Most of them graduated from VHUTEMAS, VHUTEIN, and some studied abroad where participated in many exhibitions. Students of I. Mashkov, M. Matyushin, B. Ioganson, A. Deyneka, etc., they had failed to meet social demands and were forgotten in Russia. Their names came to light only at the end of the 20th century.

Boris Vladimirsky, Olga Vaulina, George Ivanovsky, Evgeniy Teyss, Vladamir Gremitskikh, Nikolai Terpsikhorov, many other painters and graphic artists… The Russian and far-sighted foreign collectors take honest interest in their art. Their works have been presented at the greatest auctions as Sotheby's (London), Dorotheum (Vienna), etc.

The New Gallery was one of the first to start bringing to light these names in 1980s. For a long time we have been collecting, studying, discovering new “image” of this period. By now we possess a unique collection of pictorial, graphic, applied art belonging to the Soviet period of 1920-1950s, as well as one of the richest private placard assemblages in Russia presenting about 1300 works dated from 1880 to 1950s brought from different regions of Russia.

The gallery cooperates with the greatest experts in Arts of the first half of the 20th century, with the museums and owners of private assemblages. We also collaborate with the Placard Department of the Russian State Library (former Lenin Library), the State Museum and Exhibition Centre ROSIZO (Moscow, Russia), the Museum of Graphic Art ALBERTINO (Vienna, Austria); the Auction House BOLAFFI (Torino, Italy); the Corcoran Gallery (Washington, USA).

The Gallery took part in more than 60 Russian and International EXHIBITIONS since 1989.

Today The New Gallery can provide you with its assemblage to compile your own collection of Painting, Drawing, Soviet Poster, Russian and Soviet Porcelain, etc.

All paintings, drawings and posters you could see on our site are the originals, they are for sale (certainly, we have more pieces in our collection, which are not exhibited in our Internet pages).

The gallery bears the full responsibility for authenticity of the exhibits and information on them.
